INDUSTRIAL WATER TREATMENT
Pure and Simple: Take Charge of Water Purification with a Water Pretreatment System
Water pretreatment — the removal of pollutants from water entering the manufacturing system – is essential to keep water heating and cooling as efficiently as possible. In addition to its environmental advantages, the water purification process improves downstream efficiency and operations, reduces risk of water-borne illness, and in some cases can enable reclaiming and recycling of effluent-borne materials.
The industrial and commercial water pretreatment process involves water purification through filtration, deionization, and/or water softening. At Earthwise Environmental, we use a variety of water purification methods to engineer effective pretreatment systems to meet each client’s unique needs. Here are some of the most common water purifier systems for industrial water pretreatment:
Industrial Water Softeners
Water softening is the removal of calcium, magnesium and other minerals in hard water, usually by passing it through some sort of salt-based medium. Industrial water softening is effective at reducing or eliminating scale build-up in boilers, valves and other equipment. This helps to reduce costs by extending the life of filters and equipment, and reducing maintenance expenses.
Deionization
Most water impurities are either solid particles or dissolved salts. While a simple mechanical filter will take out particulate, the most practical method to remove salt is chemical. Deionization (DI) is the chemical process of removing dissolved impurities, or ions, from water. Ion exchange, the simplest method of DI, neutralizes ions with other ions and is adequate for relatively low concentrations of impurities.
Deionization produces a pure, high quality of water similar to distilled water. However, it is not typically effective against organic pollutants, including water-borne pathogens.
Reverse Osmosis
For higher concentrations of impurities, reverse osmosis (RO) is preferred for industrial wastewater treatment systems. In an RO water filtration system, water is forced through a semipermeable filter under high pressure. The filter permits the water, but not the contaminants, to pass through.
RO removes all components except the hydrogen and oxygen. In addition to removing dissolved salts and minerals, RO is one of the most effective industrial water filtration methods for removing disease-causing organisms such as bacteria, viruses and protozoa from water.
